“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.”
– Marcus Aurelius
The Power of Love…Next Door
Having moved many times in our lives, we called on our neighbors shortly after moving into our new place. The lady next door was an accomplished, successful, business consultant. She lived alone with an only son in a high school within walking distance. The two of them welcomed us as neighbors.
An expensive, black car appeared in the driveway at regular intervals. The owner was her ex-husband, visiting to keep a relationship with their son. It was obvious to me that his visits were not friendly. His demeanor and his car spoke of a demanding, controlling personality, not acquainted with love and kindness. It always took a day, for her and her son to regain their spirits after his visits.
One morning, her greeting to me was different, happy, I could feel it. A week or two later, she called to me over the patio wall,
Wes, I want you to meet Bob, he is making a difference in our lives, giving us happiness.
I can see and hear it in your eyes and voice.
Bob was kind, confidant and quietly confident. A retired Airline Captain, I liked him instantly, so did my sweetheart. Her son now came home from school on time, jumping over the wall onto their patio, instead of walking through the gate. Love changed him and his mother. The black car ceased to appear.
Love is the most powerful force in the universe. It comes into being when we start thinking of the other person first; when we know they are most important to our own happiness.
